¡Arriba y Adelante!

Greetings from the Spanish Department at EVHS! This 2017-2018 academic school year is off to a great start! In addition to the traditional class offerings, we are now offering AP Spanish Language & Culture and a Dual Credit Spanish class in conjunction with Northern New Mexico College. As part of our collaboration with the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), we now have a society especially for our Spanish honor students. EVHS’ Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica Chapter, “Bendíceme Última,” is named after Rudolfo Anaya’s novel, Bless Me Ultima (1972) that reflects Chicano culture of the 1940s in rural New Mexico. Bless Me, Ultima is Anaya's best-known work; it was awarded the prestigious Premio Quinto Sol, and in 2008, the National Endowment for the Arts named it one of the 12 classic American novels. It is with honor and pride that our society bears the name of “Bendíceme Última.” We are proud to be one of only 18 Sociedades that exist in all of the State of New Mexico! For more information about the Sociedad, benefits, and membership requirements, contact your Spanish teacher.

But that’s not all! Starting September, we will be officially initiating the State of New Mexico Diploma of Excellence Bilingualism and Biliteracy Seal Program at EVHS. The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. The benefits of earning the Seal are many. Being biliterate can often bring employment benefits. Many employers consider language abilities when hiring and may offer a stipend or differentiated pay to employees who speak more than one language and have been awarded the Bilingualism-Biliteracy Seal. For more information, contact your Spanish or Tewa instructor.

This is an exciting time for the Spanish Department and we want to thank our principal, Robert Archuleta, and all staff who helped us to achieve so many of our goals! Thanks to our many students who inspire us to be more, do more, and dream big!

¡Muchas Gracias!

Ms. Rios, Ms. Lopez y Dra. Sepúlveda Rodríguez
